Don't miss your native food in the name of dieting....

We naturally tend to miss our native food in the name of dieting....2 major reasons for omitting Indian foods

1) A growing mentality that Indian food is junk

There is a mentality among our own country men that Indian food is junk....!! I never argue with such people because its their ignorance....

We say Idly-sambar is junk & enjoy eating pizza....

If we look in detailed, the work that our ancestors did and the type of food they ate matched. They had hard physical work & took more carbs...When technology grew, the type of work being done changed but we failed to alter our life style.

Indian Culture is framed such a way that sweets & snacks are meant for special occasions/festivals. But we added them in daily life.

Adopted potato chips, cake, ice cream, pizza & more in to our life style..Fast food is the latest like of almost all busy working people.....Remember they are not ours!!!..

I see Nutrition experts recommend adding turmeric daily which naturally happens in our Indian cooking method. We have a custom of eating with more than one type of vegetable in lunch.

Rasam...There cannot be such a tasty healthy soup...Just think, cumin seeds, pepper, garlic, curry leaves, dried red chili, tomatoes, fenugreek...hmm....A magic!!!

I wont say there is nothing high caloric in Indian food...Its there...All we need to do is slightly modify the way its cooked/served and look for the healthy items available...less oil, avoid frying, reduce rice, reduce sugar...add more veggies & fruits....

Below are few Indian items that I carve for, because I don't/rarely get it in US..
People in India, please use them....

1) Amla
2) different types of green leaves
3) young coconut
4) cucumbers
5) Nungu/Palm fruit
6) Seetha Pazham/Custard Apple
7) Naval Pazham/ Jambul
8) Tulsi
9) Sprouted Raagi

2) Dieting/Clean eating ideas from Western World

Because the consciousness towards fitness and dieting is more in Western world, we end up following the dieting/clean eating ideas from them...

We try to make just a salad as our lunch...I challenge you, that will never workout...The more you make the taste buds die, the more you will face emotional eating...

Reading is a most important step in fitness. You need to keep yourself updated...But everything wont apply for us. We should be intelligent enough to filter our needs and understand the basic rule of clean eating which is nothing but satisfying our taste buds and that can be achieved by staying close to native food.

If you like oats, make dosa out of it...
If you want a salad, add a pachadi in daily food with cucumber, carrots, onions, beet root....add a type of green in every lunch...
Why not a multi-grain roti replacing a tortilla
Why not a puttu out of raagi instead of pan cakes (:-) love them)

I never say, don't follow the health tips/recipes...Healthy foods are welcomed from any part of the world...Nothing to be ignored in healthy category...

All we have to ensure is that the routine doesn't go away from native food. Always try to eat in & around the method our body is used to. Dieting should not be a punishment...Its a change to be enjoyed.

Leave it to your health instinct!! It will tell you how to prepare meals.
